31-AUG-2013 : "ADAPTING BUDDHISM TO THE 21ST CENTURY" FORUM IN MEMORY OF VEN DR K SRI DHAMMANANDA'S 7TH YEAR MEMORIAL

"Adapting Buddhism to the 21st Century" Forum explores the challenges faced by Buddhism today, especially attempts to equate Buddhist doctrines with Western rationalism, humanism, and science.  This is so in order to render Buddhist ideas more accessible and intellectually attractive to a growing educated middle class of Malaysian Buddhist with a Western education. Organized in memory of Venerable Dr K Sri Dhammananda’s 7th Year Memorial to re-live the essence of his teachings to the Malaysian Buddhist for the past 50 years as he always said, “Buddhism as a religion must change, but the Dhamma as the ultimate truth will always remain pure, fresh, and relevant for all the time”. Registration is NOW OPEN!

The Late Venerable Dr K Sri Dhammananda Maha Nayaka Thera was a visionary Buddhist leader who dedicated more than 50 years of his life promoting Buddhism among Malaysians as a modern and scientific religion devoid of superstitions and useless rites and rituals. He believed the essence of the Buddha’s teachings could withstand the test of time because what the Buddha taught is the ultimate truth. However, Venerable Dhammananda was able to present the sublime Buddhist teachings in a simple and direct manner that a contemporary person could easily relate to in his everyday life. Venerable Dhammananda was convinced that Buddhism, despite being over 2600 years old, is a religion that can easily adapt to the needs of the modern world. As he always said, “Buddhism as a religion must change, but the Dharma as the ultimate truth will always remain pure, fresh, and relevant for all time”.

The Forum Adapting Buddhism to the 21st Century is therefore organized to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the passing away of the late Venerable Dr K.Sri Dhammananda. It explores the challenges faced by Buddhism today, especially attempts to equate Buddhist doctrines with Western rationalism, humanism, and science in order to render Buddhist ideas more accessible and intellectually attractive to a growing educated middle class of Malaysian Buddhists with a Western education.

Key themes of this seminar would include globalization, gender issues, and the ways in which Buddhism has confronted modernity, science, popular culture and national politics. This seminar will provide a lively and up-to-date overview that is indispensable for both new Dharma practitioners as well as seasoned students of Buddhism.

Part I of the seminar focuses on how to balance tradition with modernity, emphasizing those aspects of traditions that should be retained, and those that need to be changed in order for Buddhism to remain relevant in the modern world. This is followed by a Workshop which examines in greater detail whether tradition is itself an obstacle or an enabler of growth. The seminar concludes with a Forum titled New Approaches to Revitalize Buddhism.
